Speaking in a workshop in Islamabad, Chairman Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) Dr. Syed Ismail Shah made the bold claim.
“The government would facilitate all existing as well as new companies to test 5G in Pakistan. The facilitation would be in the form of free test license and spectrum.”
According to a PTA handout, Dr. Shah informed participants at the workshop:
“Harmonized spectrum for 5G is [available] in the 3.5 GHz band. An EoI [Expression of Interest or invite for applications] would be floated at a suitable time to gauge interest in conducting a trial before the standard is finalized in the year 2020.”
Shah explained that the government is encouraging new technological ideas and supports initiatives for the use of technology. The aim is to extend the reach across Pakistan and have an overall increase in quality of service keeping pace with the modern technology, Shah concluded.
The workshop was arranged by PTA and Ministry of IT and Telecom Division earlier this week, in collaboration with Qualcomm Pakistan by the name ‘Technology Evolution & Roadmap to 5G’ in Islamabad.
WHAT IS 5G INTERNET AND WHO HAS IT?
5th generation mobile networks or 5th generation wireless systems, abbreviated 5G, are the proposed next telecommunications standards beyond the current 4G standards. The higher compression rate in 5G allows for higher mobile broadband speed availability. 5G for that reason supports better device-to-device, ultra reliable, and massive machine communications.
5G research and development also aims at lower latency than 4G equipment and lower battery consumption, for better implementation of the Internet. The catch however lies in the fact that there is currently no standard for 5G deployments.
US, UK, China and South Korea have set 2020 as their deadline to launch the service and now Pakistan aims to make the spectrum shift along with these global superpowers.
Pakistan according to PTA surveys boasts a 3G/4G user base of almost 32 million users.
